The Power of Grit: Fuelling Achievement and Propelling Success

At Natke Volleyball, we recently had an eye-opening experience working with a team. After an intense two-hour session, I sat down with their coach to discuss my observations. One of the biggest insights I shared was that the players seemed to lack a certain greediness—an intense, almost desperate desire to succeed. This made me reflect on my own journey growing up in Ukraine, a country where resources were scarce. Our gyms were old, our gear was inadequate, and our volleyballs were practically soccer balls. Despite these challenges, we had an insatiable drive to achieve our dreams: to get paid to play volleyball, to wear the best athletic apparel, and to travel the world.

In today’s society, where wealth and resources are more abundant, it seems that extra motivation is often missing. This is where grit comes into play.

What is Grit?

Grit is the secret ingredient that fuels achievement and propels individuals towards their goals. It is the unwavering passion, perseverance, and resilience to overcome challenges and keep pushing forward, even in the face of adversity. It’s not just about working hard; it’s about maintaining effort and interest over years despite failures, adversity, and plateaus in progress.

The Science of Grit

Angela Duckworth, a pioneering psychologist, brought the concept of grit into the spotlight with her research and her book, "Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance." Duckworth’s research indicates that grit can be a more reliable predictor of success than talent or IQ. Her studies, published in peer-reviewed journals, reveal that individuals with high levels of grit are more likely to succeed in challenging environments, from military academies to spelling bees and beyond.

Why is Grit Important?

  1. Grit Fuels Motivation: Grit helps us stay focused on our goals even when the path gets tough. It provides the energy to keep moving forward, reminding us why we started in the first place.

  2. Grit Drives Perseverance: It enables us to bounce back from setbacks and keep pushing forward. When faced with obstacles, gritty individuals see opportunities to grow rather than reasons to quit.

  3. Grit Fosters Resilience: Grit empowers us to learn from failures and grow stronger. It builds a robust mindset that can weather the storms of life.

  4. Grit Cultivates a Growth Mindset: With grit, we embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and improvement. Carol Dweck’s research on growth mindset highlights that viewing abilities as improvable is crucial for success.

  5. Grit Creates a Sense of Purpose: It ignites the fire within us to pursue our passions and make a difference. Purpose-driven individuals are more likely to persist through difficult times.

Teaching Grit

Teaching grit is not about imposing hardship but about fostering resilience, passion, and perseverance. Here are some ways to cultivate grit:

  1. Encourage Passion: Help individuals find and pursue what they love. Passion fuels perseverance.

  2. Promote a Growth Mindset: Emphasize that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. Praise effort, not just results.

  3. Set Long-Term Goals: Encourage setting and working towards long-term goals. Break these into manageable steps to maintain motivation.

  4. Model Resilience: Demonstrate how to handle setbacks constructively. Share stories of personal and historical figures who have shown grit.

  5. Create a Supportive Environment: Build a community that supports each other through challenges. Collaboration and encouragement can enhance resilience.

  6. Teach Self-Discipline: Help individuals develop routines and habits that promote perseverance and discipline.

Grit in Action: Personal Reflection

Reflecting on my own journey, I realized that growing up in a resource-poor environment in Ukraine cultivated my grit. We didn’t have the best gear or facilities, but we had a burning desire to succeed. This scarcity fuelled our motivation and resilience. Today’s society may be wealthier, but that doesn’t mean we can’t foster the same level of grit. It requires conscious effort, teaching, and modeling.

Conclusion

Grit is more than just hard work; it’s about sustained effort and passion over time. At Natke Volleyball, we strive to instill this powerful trait in our players, helping them overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. By understanding and teaching grit, we can empower the next generation to reach their full potential, regardless of the resources at their disposal. Remember, it’s not the resources that create grit, but the relentless pursuit of our passions and goals.
